Can You Walk Through the Castle at Disney World?
For many visitors to Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, the first glimpse of Cinderella’s Castle at the end of Main Street is one of those unforgettable Disney moments. It’s the tallest structure in Magic Kingdom, the centrepiece of the park, and one of the most photographed Disney castles in the world.
We’ve just come back from a trip to Disney World in Orlando and even though I’ve been lucky enough to have seen it a few times before, it’s still really cool seeing it for the first time on each trip, and this time, getting to have our daughter with us, too.

If you’re planning your trip, you might be wondering – can you actually walk through the castle, or is it just something to admire from the outside?
The answer is yes – but perhaps not in the way you might expect.
Yes, You Can Walk Through Cinderella’s Castle
The good news is that there is a castle archway running straight through Cinderella Castle, allowing guests to walk from Main Street, U.S.A. into Fantasyland. You don’t need a special ticket or reservation (but visitors still need valid admission to Magic Kingdom), making it the only way to experience the inside of the castle for most visitors.
Although it isn’t a full walkthrough attraction, passing through the castle is an attraction in itself. Rather than leading you through grand halls or towers, the passageway tells the story of Cinderella through a series of beautiful decorative displays.
If you’re rushing between rides, it’s easy to miss, but it’s well worth slowing down to take a closer look.
It is normally open during the day, although Disney may temporarily close it during performances, fireworks preparations or special events.
What You’ll See Inside the Castle
As you walk beneath the castle, you’ll discover a series of detailed mosaic murals depicting the story of Cinderella. These aren’t ordinary mosaics either.
The passageway contains five handcrafted mosaic murals depicting Cinderella’s journey from mistreated servant to princess. Together, the murals are made from more than one million pieces of coloured glass, with some tiles containing real gold and silver. The craftsmanship is remarkable, with rich colours, gold detailing and intricate patterns that many guests walk past without realising.
Keep an eye out for the decorative coats of arms, elegant stonework and subtle blue accents woven throughout the design, all helping create the feeling that you’ve stepped into a real fairy-tale castle.
Can You Explore the Rest of the Castle?
This is where many people are surprised.
Unlike some real castles, you can’t freely wander through towers, staircases or royal rooms. Most of the castle isn’t open to guests.
However, there are a few special experiences inside Cinderella’s Castle.
Cinderella’s Royal Table
The most popular is Cinderella’s Royal Table, a hugely popular dining experience located inside the castle.
Guests meet Cinderella in the Grand Hall before heading upstairs to the banquet room, where other Disney Princesses, including favourites such as Snow White (depending on the day’s character appearances), often visit diners at their tables. Exact character appearances can change. The restaurant has stone archways, medieval flags and stained-glass windows to enjoy as you dine.
Reservations are highly sought after, so it’s worth booking as early as possible if this experience is on your wish list. Park admission is required separately.
Can You Visit the Cinderella Castle Suite?
Hidden high inside the castle is the famous Cinderella Castle Suite.
Space inside the castle was originally set aside for private accommodation that could be used by the Disney family and company executives. Walt Disney died before Walt Disney World was built, however, and the area remained unfinished for many years. It was eventually transformed into the Cinderella Castle Suite – an incredibly luxurious royal bedroom in 2006.
Sadly, there isn’t a public tour, and the suite cannot be booked as an ordinary hotel room. Overnight stays are exceptionally rare and have generally been offered through Disney promotions, competitions, charity opportunities or special invitations.
Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique
Located directly behind Cinderella Castle, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique offers makeovers for children aged 3 to 12. Depending on the package selected, the experience can include hairstyling, make-up, nail polish, clothing and themed accessories.
It’s a particularly popular experience for young fans of the Disney Princesses, so advance reservations are strongly recommended, and admission to Magic Kingdom is required separately.
Entertainment at the Front of the Castle
The front of the castle is one of the busiest entertainment locations in Magic Kingdom.
Throughout the day you’ll often find performances on the castle stage, including Mickey’s Magical Friendship Faire, a lively stage show featuring Mickey Mouse, beloved Disney characters and favourite songs.
During seasonal events and nighttime spectaculars, the castle also becomes the backdrop for projections, fireworks and dazzling lighting effects that transform its appearance completely.
Entertainment schedules change, so check the My Disney Experience app on the day of your visit.
Is Cinderella’s Castle Based on a Real Castle?
Cinderella Castle was inspired primarily by the castle seen in Disney’s 1950 animated film Cinderella. Its fairy-tale design also incorporates features associated with historic European castles and palaces rather than copying one building exactly.
Disney’s Imagineers combined different architectural styles to create something uniquely Disney, balancing fairy-tale charm with practical engineering. Despite looking enormous, clever forced perspective makes the upper towers appear even taller than they really are.

How Does It Compare With Other Disney Castles?
Every Disney castle has its own personality.
Tokyo Disneyland also has a Cinderella Castle, while Disneyland in California has the much smaller Sleeping Beauty Castle. Other Disney resorts have their own distinctive centrepiece castles, including the Enchanted Storybook Castle at Shanghai Disneyland and the Castle of Magical Dreams at Hong Kong Disneyland.
Although each castle has its own design and story, many visitors still consider Cinderella Castle at Disney World to be the most iconic because of its size, location and central role in Magic Kingdom.
While you can’t spend hours exploring hidden rooms or climbing towers, walking through Cinderella’s Castle is still a magical part of any visit to Walt Disney World. Between the breathtaking mosaics, the chance to dine at Cinderella’s Royal Table, magical makeovers at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, and spectacular entertainment in front of the castle, there’s far more to discover than many first-time visitors realise.
So next time you’re strolling down Main Street, don’t just admire the beauty of the castle from afar. Take a few extra minutes to wander through the archway, look closely at the incredible details, and enjoy one of the most charming hidden experiences in Magic Kingdom.
