Summer officially started on Saturday, and hopefully, the lovely weather is on its way back to us and we will be able to spend lots of time outdoors again.
We’ve really been enjoying our garden during lockdown and luckily it’s been so sunny and warm for a lot of that time so on some days we have spent the majority of the day out there. Now that we’re also able to go further afield and therefore can visit more country parks and other outdoor spaces we will hopefully all get to enjoy plenty of time outside, in the fresh air over the summer months.
There is, of course, the odd negative to spending so much time outside, and one of those is those pesky insects who want to have a little feast on our delicious skin.
Insect bites can be such an annoyance over the summer and on holiday and can be so itchy and stingy and often hard to treat. So often I find that they can be uncomfortable for a long time after you’ve been bitten or stung and you don’t always have a handy cream on you that works effectively. This is especially true when you are on holiday abroad and there are lots of mosquitos around and it can be so frustrating when you’re constantly itching like crazy and making a bite even sorer.
I’ve recently been told about bite away® which I hadn’t heard of before and I think it’s a great idea so I wanted to tell you about it. I also have a giveaway where you can enter to win 1 of 2 bite away devices for yourself!
bite away® is a chemical-free medical device for the symptomatic treatment of itching, pain and swelling caused by insect bites and stings in just two minutes.
The nifty little device uses heat technology and has been clinically proven to reduce the symptoms of bites and stings quickly. You can use it for any bites and stings caused by mosquitoes, wasps, bees, hornets, horseflies and other biting insects.
It’s really easy to use, you just hold the end of the device against where you have been bitten or stung and press either one of the buttons — the left one gives a 3-second treatment for the more sensitive of us and the right gives a 6-second treatment.
If you use it as soon as you are stung or bitten then it can even prevent any symptoms from appearing at all, but even if it is used slightly later then it can reduce symptoms quickly and effectively.
I’ve given it a try and it definitely does feel a bit stingy for a few seconds, but it’s over quickly and if it can take away any itching, pain and swelling then I think it’s well worth it, compared to being sore and uncomfortable all day!
The science bit…
bite away works by concentrating heat at 51°C on the affected area, creating two mechanisms of action:
The mechanism of action of applying concentrated heat (local hyperthermia) is based upon the brief, concentrated effect of heat on a very small area of skin. Even a locally limited application of heat may be enough to trigger a pain and itch-relieving reaction of the body.
This means that once the pen heats to the right temperature and you use it on the area of skin affected by the sting or bite, that heat transfer quickly reduces skin itching, pain and swelling.
I, unfortunately (!) haven’t been bitten since I got my bite away so I haven’t been able to try it out for myself on a bite, but there is clinical evidence that it is an effective treatment as well as loads of brilliant Amazon reviews confirming that it works, including sixty 5* reviews.
Clinical evidence has shown that bite away is effective in the symptomatic management of insect bites and stings. A study that measured pain, swelling and itching of insect bites and stings after treatment with bite away found that:
As I said, there are also so many fantastic reviews for the product on Amazon with loads of people saying how brilliantly it works for them, particularly when nothing else has helped. Lots of the reviewers are people who get bitten a lot in summer or when on holiday and so bite away can really make a difference to people.
bite away currently costs £26.99 on Amazon, and whilst that may seem like a bit of an investment at first, particularly compared to cheaper treatments such as creams, there are so many positives to choosing bite away.
I love that it is chemical-free. Obviously, most things we put onto and in our body contain chemicals, some of which can be harmful, so I do like to limit the use of nasty ingredients as much as I can, especially when it comes to my daughter. I would much rather use this on a bite or sting than a cream that likely wouldn’t even work as well and may be sticky-feeling or greasy — whereas bite away is completely clean and dry to use.
I think the portability of it is a big plus — it’s a small device that will fit easily in any bag when you are out and about or in your suitcase when going on holiday. Over the summer it is easy to just chuck it into your bag when going out so that you always have it with you when you really need it and it won’t run out like a cream will (it does require batteries but they should last for ages).
It would be particularly beneficial to have with you when going for a long walk in the countryside or if you are hiking, as well as being brilliant for camping. An insect bite can be so damn irritating, especially when you are out and walking and you can’t relax and enjoy yourself when you can’t stop itching.
Last year when we went camping in July, Ava got bitten on her foot and it went really red and she couldn’t stop scratching it and it really bothered her for hours. I wish we’d had this then — we could have used it straight away and then she could have got on with playing again instead of moaning about it for ages!
It’s also dermatologically tested and suitable and safe for allergy sufferers, pregnant women and children so the entire family (or whoever you are with) can use it without worrying about what is in it like with a cream or ointment.
Over 5 million of them have sold worldwide and they have an Amazon score of 4.7 / 5 so you can see that this really works.
You can buy bite away in the UK on Amazon (and it is available on Prime so you can get it the next day!) here: bite away. For more info go here: Biteaway website.
