A Guide to South Africa’s Premier Wine Regions
Wine is a hugely popular drink across the world, with a huge variety of different types to tantalize every tastebud. Several countries are renowned for producing excellent wine, and South Africa is one of them.

South Africa trips would not be complete without a visit to a wine region. Three of the best wine regions in the country are Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl. Let’s take a look at what makes these must-visit destinations.
Stellenbosch: South Africa’s premier wine destination
Stellenbosch is arguably the most famous wine region in South Africa and home to some of the best wineries. The quality of the wine from the area is top-tier and ranges from Merlot to Cabernet Sauvignon.
Fans of Pinotage should make this a top priority as the wine was born here in 1924 by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault grapes. The town itself is a charming visit with Cape Dutch-style buildings nestled amongst Georgian and Victorian architecture.
With the first vines planted in the 1690s, the region has a long history of wine production which shows in the several education centres dotted around the region. Stellenbosch is also key to wine tourism and was the first area to create a network of wineries that create a formal wine route.
Franschhoek: The French corner of Wint Country
Meaning French Quarter in Afrikaans, Franschhoek has a reputation of being the food and wine capital of South Africa, so visitors will not be disappointed. World-famous restaurants are neighbors with beautiful vineyards, both of which are set to a stunning backdrop of natural landscape.
For a unique experience, you need to use the Franschhoek Wine Tram. With five lines to choose from, you can hop on and off as you desire to experience wines and food, or you can book a guided tour that will showcase the best the area has to offer. Some wineries such as Le Pommier Wine Estate are only available on the navy line, for example, so try to plan your route if there is somewhere you really want to stop at.
Paarl: A diverse wine region with heritage and innovation
Sited just north of the Stellenbosch region, Paarl is surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges which help to create a microclimate that is unique to the area.
Paarl is an incredibly diverse wine-producing area. Here you can find robust reds alongside crisp whites and everything in between. Chenin Blanc in particular is a cornerstone of Paarl wine-making.
Why not treat yourself to a wine-and-food pairing experience at Fairview Wine and Cheese? The innovative pairings are incredible, especially as they produce their own cow and goat’s cheeses. Children can also get involved with some milder cheeses paired with glasses of lemonade.
