7 Practical Uses For Your Basement

Source

Basements can be handy additional spaces to have in a home. They can be converted into extra rooms for various purposes, from guest bedrooms to entertainment rooms. If you’ve moved into a home with an underground space and you’re unsure of how to put it to use, here are a few different ideas for inspiration.

Guest bedroom

Regularly have friends and family staying over? Turning your basement into a guest bedroom could be a practical conversion idea to consider. This will likely require making some cosy upgrades, such as incorporating some warm colours, installing some extra lighting and laying down a rug. On top of a bed, consider adding some storage furniture such as bedside cabinets, a wardrobe or some drawers for your guest to unpack their clothes. You could even add some hotel room amenities like a TV and a tea/coffee station.

Additional bathroom

If you’re fed up with queues for the bathroom, consider turning your basement into a second bathroom. Even small cellars often have enough room for a toilet, sink and walk-in shower. If you’ve got a larger bathroom, you could consider treating yourself to something more luxurious. Perhaps your own private spa with a whirlpool bathtub and a sauna? Or you could consider a guest bedroom with an en suite bathroom.

Laundry room

Basements can make excellent laundry rooms. They provide great sound insulation to muffle the sound of a washing machine or dryer. You’ll need to make sure that the room is well ventilated and that it has electricity and plumbing. There are companies that specialise in laundry renovations that can also help you build custom laundry cabinets and benchtops.

Home gym

Fitness fanatics that want a space to work out from home could consider turning their basement into a home gym. Such a room could allow space for large equipment like barbells, treadmills and exercise bikes. Make sure that the space is well ventilated and consider fans or an AC unit to keep it cool. You’ll also likely want to upgrade the flooring (rubber mats are a cheap and practical option). You could also consider other fun features like a TV or a music sound system.

Workshop

If you’re into craft hobbies or DIY repairs, the idea of your own private workshop could be appealing. A basement could be the perfect space to store all the tools and equipment you need. You can also set up a workbench and lay down some rubber floor tiles. Because basements are often poorly ventilated, you will need to consider options like installing an exhaust fan – especially if you’re working with paints, glues or materials that create a lot of dust.

Home office

More of us are working from home and are in need of a personal workspace. Turning your basement into a home office could make sense if you’re currently having to work out of a living room, dining room or bedroom. You can optimise the room for productivity with a large desk, plenty of lighting and motivational decor (like posters, photos or awards).

Entertainment room

A basement could also make the perfect entertainment room for all your passions. You could set up a projector, screen, movie theatre seats and surround sound speaker for watching movies. You could set up all your music media here and use it as a place to listen to music. You could turn it into a place to play video games. Or you could use it as a place to play traditional games like darts, pool or board games. Whatever entertains you!
