6 Simple Things I Would Like to Add to My Home This Winter

21st November 2019

For many of us (including me), the winter months can be hard on us and our mental health, with all of the dark, rainy and cold days. We tend to hibernate a lot more, and so ideally our home should be a cosy, comfortable place, full of things that make us happy and keep our spirits up.

I know I can get very down during the winter, and so I thought I would share some of the simple things I would like to add to our home, or the little things I’d like to change that would make a big difference to our enjoyment of our home over the winter months and hopefully help to keep us in high spirits.

Our house is looking quite drab and the whole place really could do with a new lick of paint and some updating and improving here and there, and it can make me feel quite rubbish. I want my home to be somewhere that I’m proud of, with rooms that I want to be in and feel comfortable in. It may sound silly, but being a blogger, it would really help to have a home that is a bit more Instagram-worthy — not so that I can become really popular and get millions of followers (although I wouldn’t complain about that), but so it is easier to take photos with nice backgrounds and have more home content to photograph.

Of course, we don’t necessarily have the money to make all of these changes or buy more stuff, especially all at once, but if I could then these are the simple changes I would like to make.

6 Simple Things I Would Like to Add or Do to My Home This Winter

Mirrors

I would love to add more mirrors around my home, to really open it up and make some areas look bigger. We really only have a couple of mirrors that are for practical use, but I would love a big snazzy mirror on the main wall of the lounge, as well as one in the hall to give the illusion of more space.

Art

I really want more pieces of art to give more character to my house and brighten up certain areas. They really don’t have to cost a lot for me — I am in no way an art connoisseur — but I like simple or brightly coloured prints that just look nice or cool and add something to a room. I have been looking at Desenio recently as they have some really reasonably-priced prints and I have an empty frame to fill, and I also have a look at the art in TK Maxx every time I go (we have one very local to us, so I go rather a lot!).

Beanbag

I have always loved those massive beanbags that your whole body can fit on and I’ve always fancied one, and I know Ava would absolutely love one in her room or in the lounge as well. She’s always laying about on cushions and blankets, and I think they look so cosy and homely, so I would love to add one to our lounge. It would also mean extra seating when we have people round.

More plants

I am finally, at the grand old age of 35 doing better at keeping plants alive. They may still almost look dead and be thirstier than my daughter when she should be trying to sleep, but I (usually) manage to notice now and water them before they go to the big place in the sky.

So, I would like to get some more plants and in particular, add a few to my lounge where I don’t currently have any. I love how greenery looks in a room, so I would love to get a few more to bring some more life to my house, plus they’re good for you too.

Paint the bathroom

Our bathroom is very small, and there are tiles covering a decent chunk of it, so it wouldn’t take a lot of paint to do it all, and it would improve the look of it SO much. It hasn’t been painted since we moved in (far too long ago) and it is in desperate need. It is white (debatable) at the moment and I would probably do it the same again as it is so small, but it would brighten it up so much and make me feel a lot better. I will get around to it soon!

Add rugs, cushions and throws

We already have plenty of cushions and throws, but I don’t really make use of them enough to make everything look more cosy and inviting. A soft blanket really brings a warmth to a room so I want to have them hanging over the backs of sofas and over the end of my bed so that they are always available to grab and snuggle up with.

I have recently got some new cushions for the lounge from TK Maxx, which I really love. I was sick of how thin and crappy looking the previous ones were, and these are so soft and thick and they look so much better. Now I’d like to add a big rug — most likely from Ikea as they have some great well-priced ones — so that the majority of the old carpet is covered up and the room looks more appealing and co-ordinated. And I’d love couple more rugs in other areas of the house too, especially as we have a lot of wooden floors.
