5 Tips for Hiring the Best Employees

Source

Having a strong team of hardworking employees is the dream of any employer. It can be key to the success of your company and it can make running your company a lot easier and more enjoyable. Below are 5 tips on how you can recruit the best people for the job.

Advertise far and wide

To access the entire talent pool, you need to cast your net wide. Don’t just advertise on a single job board – consider advertising on multiple job boards. You can also use social media to advertise jobs. This includes LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram. It’s also possible to put up posters or leave flyers in strategic places. Think about where your ideal employee is likely to hang out and target these locations.

Work with top-quality recruiters

Recruitment agencies can help you to track down applicants – not just through advertising, but through headhunting too. Consider executive search recruitment companies if you’re looking for top-tier candidates for high-level roles. Industry-specific recruitment agencies can meanwhile be used to find talent within certain industries. There will usually be fees or commissions for using recruitment services, so you do need to factor this in.

Allow enough time to receive plenty of applications

Too many companies rush the recruitment process and start thinking about interviews after only receiving a handful of applications. Unless it’s an urgent position to fill, consider allowing a few weeks to receive as many applications as possible. This will maximise your chance of finding the perfect candidate. This does mean allocating more time to read through applications; however, software may help narrow the process by focusing on applications with the right keywords.

Provide decent pay and benefits

Good candidates don’t apply to bad jobs. They know that they can get almost any job they apply for, and so they have the freedom to be more selective. Make sure that the job you’re advertising is attractive to top-quality candidates by offering competitive compensation. This could include a salary higher than your competitors’ or generous benefits such as flexible working or childcare support. Obviously, you don’t want to be too generous with the perks you offer – make sure you can reasonably afford their salary and any benefits you offer.

It’s also worth thinking beyond the hiring stage, because talented employees usually want to know there’s room to keep growing once they join the company (and it’s such a giant red flag if companies try to block it). So, giving new hires access to an employee development platform can help them build skills, find useful training, and feel there’s a clear path forward rather than being hired and then left to figure everything out on their own.

Carry out assessments

One of the best ways to determine whether an applicant is suitable is to conduct assessments. This could include a skills-based assessment and a company fit assessment. These assessments could be carried out online using software, or you could assess them using interview questions. To assess certain physical skills, you could consider a trial shift or ask them to provide a demonstration of their skills during the interview (for example, asking a candidate for a chef position to prepare a specific dish).

Hiring the best employees involves going above and beyond in your recruitment process. Advertise thoroughly and conduct an assessment to accurately determine whether an applicant is suitable for the role.

It is also worth remembering that a bad hire does not just cost you time; the financial impact of replacing an employee can be far higher than most employers expect, particularly when you factor in lost productivity, onboarding, and the legal implications of a poorly managed exit. Understanding what employee turnover actually costs is a useful starting point before committing to a recruitment process and can help you make a stronger case internally for investing in getting the hiring process right from the start.
