Now that the festive season has been and gone, there’s a good chance that the novelty of the cross trainer at the gym has worn off and that your motivation levels are at an all-time low. If you set yourself targets this year and are becoming dangerously close to giving up on all of the progress you’ve made so far, then keep reading, because here are some tips on how to get your exercise plan back on track.

Write a list

A great way of getting your motivation levels back on track is by writing a list of all of the reasons you wanted to start exercising in the first place, especially if you’re finding it hard to even drag yourself to the gym or attend that new class you signed up for. Ask yourself why you wanted to be fitter, or maybe you wanted to lose a few pounds. Was it just about being fitter, or was it so that you could feel amazing in that sleek dress at your friend’s wedding? Writing this list will help spark that motivation when you simply can’t be bothered to head to the gym or put in the fitness DVD – simply reread the list, and it will give you the push that you need.

Sign up for a challenge

Many people actually work harder if there’s a goal that they need to hit. If you’re struggling to stick to your new regime because it’s not disciplined enough, then why not look into doing something that involves raising money for charity or taking part in a competition? Whether it’s a 5k run for a charity that means a lot to you or even asking those to sponsor you towards a weight loss goal and you’ll donate the funds, it’s a great way of giving you an extra push. You can either do the challenge alone or get friends and family involved with fitness courses to help you train, but either way, if you’ve got other people involved and depending on you, you’re more likely to achieve what you set out to do.

Find ways to make it fun

Finally, one of the main reasons people don’t stick to their fitness goals is simply because they don’t enjoy what they’re doing. And it’s not surprising that you’re losing motivation to go to the gym if you’re doing the same thing. If you’re bored of the gym or want to introduce other exercises into your regime, then try out new activities in your workout plans. Exercising shouldn’t be boring – it should be something you enjoy so that you look forward to doing it again and pushing yourself even further. There are so many different sports you could try, and the truth is, as long as your blood is pumping and you’re working up a sweat, you’re exercising! So, make sure you find ways to make exercising fun so that you don’t skip out on it and get a takeout instead. You can do this!
