What I’ve Been Watching on Netflix

19th June 2019

I love Netflix. It is the place where I watch the majority of shows, whether that is on an actual television or on my iPad. I love fictional tv, especially at the moment; I love watching something and using it to switch off a bit in the evenings, with my feet up and a glass of wine in my hand.

Over the last few weeks, I have binge-watched a few new shows that I have really enjoyed and so I thought I would share them with you in case you are looking for something new to watch!

What I’ve Been Watching on Netflix

Dead to Me

I got into Dead to Me very quickly and was disappointed when I had got to the end of the ten episodes without realising. Dead to Me is a kind of dark comedy-drama and stars Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini as Jen and Judy who meet at a grief counselling meeting, and they are both great in it. I had seen Linda Cardellini in Bloodline a couple of years ago but I didn’t really love the programme or her character, but I love her SO much in this. I just can’t stop looking at her, which may sound weird, and I want her hair. And I didn’t quite realise how good of an actor Christina Applegate is either; I really like her in this.

Jen’s husband recently died in a hit-and-run, and the sardonic widow is determined to solve the crime. Optimistic free spirit Judy has recently suffered a tragic loss of her own. The ladies meet at a support group and, despite their polar-opposite personalities, become unlikely friends. As the women bond over bottles of wine and a shared affinity for “The Facts of Life,” Judy tries to shield Jen from a shocking secret that could destroy her life as she knows it.

It’s just very easy to watch and quite fun but with some depth to it. Season 2 hasn’t been picked up by Netflix yet but hopefully, it will be soon!

What/If

This stars Renée Zellweger alongside Jane Levy (who I now love) and Blake Jenner and is another 10-episode drama that is produced by Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis. It is an anthology series which tackles a different morality tale, and the ripple effect of a single decision that changes the trajectory of an entire life.

Being an anthology series means that the next series will be about a different set of characters but there is talk of them using the same cast, which I think would be interesting and I would like to see that as the cast are really good. I particularly loved Jane Levy (who reminds me of Emma Stone, who I also adore) and Samantha Marie Ware, and it was great to see Renée Zellweger in such a different role.

Gilmore Girls

I’ve just rewatched the entire 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls and I loved it just as much as the first time. I really think it might be my favourite programme ever. It’s so easy to watch but there is so much to it and the characters and the relationships between them are brilliant. I just love it so so much and I wish it could carry on forever and the characters wouldn’t age as fast as me and it would be wonderful (and weird). I’ve decided that my daughter and I are Lorelai and Rory, that’s how cool (sad and obsessed) I am.

Gilmore Girls is set in a storybook Connecticut town and is a multigenerational drama about family and friendship which centres around Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter, Rory. The small town they live in is one where everybody knows everyone and everything. Lorelai has to contend with weekly dinners with her judgemental, well-off parents Richard and Emily Gilmore who always have an opinion about her life.

The 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls ended in 2007, and in 2016 they brought it back with a 4 part mini-series – Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life which I enjoyed much more the second time around. It isn’t anywhere near as good as the original series, and it is really weird seeing them all suddenly ten years older, but I still loved it for more of my favourite characters and their lives. Hopefully, there will be another revival because I want to find out what happens after the ending in the last part!

There are also some shows that I haven’t watched yet or that are coming to Netflix soon that I am excited to watch:

Easy

I have just started watching this and am a few episodes in. It’s currently on season 3 so I’m not sure why I haven’t come across it before, but I haven’t heard anyone to talk about it either. It is a comedy-drama anthology series set in Chicago, and each episode is only half an hour long so it’s nice and easy to watch and I’m enjoying it so far.

Good Girls

I watched Season 1 of this when it came on Netflix last year and it’s very easy to watch. Season 2 has just become available now too which is good because I’m running out of new things to watch! I have just started rewatching Season 1 again because it was a while ago that I saw it and I can’t remember it that clearly.

It is an American crime comedy-drama, starring Christina Hendricks, Retta, and Mae Whitman (who I think is great), and is nice and fun but with a good mix of drama and more serious issues too.

As Beth, Ruby and Annie face personal and financial crises, they decide to team up and take back their lives — by robbing their local grocery store.

Designated Survivor

I really loved watching the first two seasons of Designated Survivor On Netflix and was very disappointed to hear that they weren’t going to be making a third series. Thankfully it has been picked up by Netflix and has just arrived and I can’t wait to watch it. I love Kiefer Sutherland and love seeing him in a different role as The President, and all of the main characters are so likeable and interesting. I particularly like Italia Ricci‘s character, Emily and Kal Penn‘s, Seth.

Designated Survivor is an American political thriller drama series that begins when a lower-level cabinet member, Tom Kirkman is catapulted into the oval office after a devastating attack on the night of the State of the Union address, which claims the lives of the president and most of the Cabinet. In his new position of power, he struggles to keep the country from dissolving into chaos and has to adjust to his new normal, unaware of the horrors awaiting the United States. I can’t wait to watch Season 3!

What have you been watching lately? I’d love to hear your recommendations.
