The Household Jobs We Love to Hate

27th April 2019

Unless you are Mrs Hinch or one of her army of ‘hinchers’, housework is probably something that you know always needs doing, but something you hate nevertheless. We all have some tasks that we would prefer to do over others, and here, we are going to look at some of the household jobs we all just love to hate!

Cleaning The Bathroom

Of all the rooms in the house to clean, the bathroom is probably the most disliked of them all. Let’s face it, there are very few people who love getting on their hands and knees and cleaning the toilet after someone else has used it. Even worse is the task of unblocking your toilet or sink – it is always a pretty grim job! One tip to keeping the loo a bit cleaner is to swish some bleach down there after the last person has used it on an evening and leave it to do its thing.

Taking Out The Rubbish

It might be one of those jobs that only takes a few minutes once a day or once a week, but taking out the rubbish and recycling is one of those chores that no one seems to like to do! Try putting some bin powder in the bottom of your bin when you change the liner. It doesn’t magically turn it into a pleasant task, but it keeps some of the pongs away.

Laundry

Keeping on top of the laundry seems to be a neverending cycle, especially if you have children. The washing, the drying, the ironing and then putting it away – it just doesn’t stop! Sadly, there are very few ways to make this task much easier, apart from just getting on with it – or buy clothes that dry quickly and don’t need ironing!

Washing Up

If you are lucky enough to have a dishwasher, this isn’t too bad a job, but if you have to do it by hand – BORING! Washing up all the plates and pots and pans after a big meal, like a Sunday roast can take longer than eating it! Our tip for making this one a bit easier is to have a bowl of hot, soapy water ready to put the saucepans in, so when you do come to wash them up, they’ve already had a good old soak.

Vacuuming

This, on the surface, can seem like one of the more manageable tasks. After all, you just have to push the vacuum around, and it does the job for you, right? Wrong! Moving out furniture to get underneath, unplugging it and plugging it somewhere else (because sockets are always in the wrong place!) getting into those corners and crevices makes it one of the more physical jobs we have to do. Try using a window squeegee to get into the corners and the edges of the room. It does mean getting down on your hands and knees, but the satisfaction of seeing all the hairs and embedded bits that the vacuum doesn’t get up makes it worth it, we promise!
