The First Year With a Puppy, by Ava

16th February 2022

This is a post about the first year of having a puppy. We have a puppy who is 1 year old and a Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Scout.

first day with the puppy!

Yes, it is hard, but it brings you all the joy in the world. The first day we brought the little rascal home she was tiny, and we took her to our garden to go to the toilet and she had never stepped on the floor and she sat down happily with her new family and ate some grass! And then our cat Molly came out looking a bit shocked (no surprise) and they said hi and Molly was a bit confused, but they got along well. That was for the first month then Molly found out she was staying and Scout could hold her own, so if Scout came too close, Molly would hiss and then would try to whack her with her paw.

Finding the right breed

So, finding the perfect breed. If you have a family, some good breeds are Golden Retriever, Labrador, but both of these need a lot of walks. Now. if you don’t walk so much a good dog is a Cavalier. These still need regular walks but are happy with a shorter couple of walks each day or one long one.

Toilet training

Teaching a dog to go to the bathroom outside is tricky and where you live is a major part of this so you need a garden or somewhere your dog/puppy can go to the toilet. For the first few nights of having a puppy, you should put down some puppy pads. Then try to learn your dog’s toilet behaviour. In my experience when my dog needs the toilet she will circle and ignore me. Some people like to get toilet bells, which are simply what they sound like; when your dog has learnt a special command like outside or toilet the bells are there so your dog can tell you when it needs to go outside; it knocks the bells and is simply saying “please open the door”. If your dog has digestive issues, it could be worth exploring a new food. You can find the best dog food brands here.

Your dog’s body language

5 Ways to Teach Your Kids How to Take Care of a Puppy

It is easy to understand your dog by their body language so generally if your dog’s tail is tucked between its legs and is quiet it usually means your dog is scared or sad. When you meet a dog it sometimes lifts one paw, a lot of people shake it but it is not trying to be nice and shake your hand. This paw raising is often that the dog is feeling nervous and unsure and raising its paw as a sign of submission.
