Oral Health Tips: 4 Ways to Protect Your Smile

25th November 2021

We often invest lots of money and time in ensuring that we look good. We buy the best skin care products for our skin, visit the gym to appear fit and healthy, and nourish our bodies with the best food. While these things have the potential to make you appear attractive, a broad and genuine smile is what sets you apart from the crowd, hence a reason why you must protect it at all costs.

But how do you protect your smile? By brushing your teeth three times daily? Or by getting charcoal toothpaste? Protecting your smile involves more than brushing your teeth regularly. Of course, it has a role to play. But, embracing such an option alone isn’t enough.

Here are four essential ways to protect your smile.

1.  Invest in an athletic mouthguard

Are you a sports fanatic? Do you play rugby, football, or basketball? If yes, you need an athletic mouthguard to protect your smile. Oral and facial injuries are prevalent among athletes. A blow to the cheek is all it takes to knock out some teeth and force you to pay a visit to the emergency dentist who handles such emergency cases. To prevent any injury that threatens your smile, you’ll have to invest in a sports mouthguard. You can either go for the professionally designed guard or the commercial alternative.

2.  Floss daily

Many of us forget to floss, while some see the act as a waste of time. Regardless of where you fall, it would be best if you understood that failing to floss exposes your tooth surface to plaques and acids. Of course, you have your toothbrush! But can your toothbrush get to those tight areas between your teeth? Definitely not! Here is where flossing comes in.

Flossing helps check your mouth for potential cavities, including swelling and redness. But that’s not all. Flossing helps make your teeth appear brighter by discarding plaques and excess food that are less visible. Consider flossing a day for max results. If you despise flossing, probably because it hurts your teeth, you can consider a water flosser.

 3.  Drink adequate water

How many cups of water do you drink per day? 9? 8? Or just 6? If you are guilty of taking below the recommended daily fluid intake ( 15 cups), you should drop such a habit and drink enough water. Water has several therapeutic properties. It is also considered a natural cleaner even though it doesn’t physically discard plaque that smears your teeth.

Drinking water regularly can help rinse your mouth, dilute acids from food, plaques, and beverages, and protect your teeth.

Is your mouth always dry? Or do you always complain of low saliva flow?  If yes, practice the act of drinking enough water to help prevent the effects of xerostomia and keep your mouth lubricated. Also, after meals, consider rinsing your mouth with water to flush out food residuals.

4.  Select the best toothbrush to protect your mouth

When purchasing toothbrushes for our teeth, some of us often pick those with stiff bristles. We feel that the harder the bristles, the better the toothbrush. But, that is a major misconception. In fact, hard toothbrush bristles can harm your gumlines and enamel. Rather than go for such toothbrushes, consider investing in a soft or extra-soft toothbrush. Such a type of toothbrush wouldn’t hurt your gumlines or enamel. Also, they are pretty easy to use and maintain.

Conclusion

You would agree that a broad, genuine smile is the best outfit anyone can wear. But how do you showcase your teeth when it’s smeared with plaques?  If you would love to smile without holding back, you should take your oral health seriously. Eat meals that are good for your teeth. Floss regularly and increase your water intake so when next you take photos your smile is so attractive that it steals the show.
