Is Your Home Still Fit for Purpose? A Practical Property Checklist

Source

As a homeowner, you’ve probably asked yourself at some point whether your property is fit for purpose. The answer can sometimes shock you. The more you explore its functionality, safety, and efficiency, the more it seems to let you down. In this post, we ask some critical questions that can determine whether your property is actually performing up to the mark. If it’s not, you’ll need to take action.

Does your property have the layout you want?

The first question to ask yourself is whether your property has the layout you want. This applies whether you are a landlord or a direct homeowner. Are the people who live in your property able to use it the way that they want? For example, if you are a young professional, do you have a private space for work and study? Is there a quiet zone if you want downtime away from the family, and does the layout of the property support your daily routines and workflows? If it doesn’t, then you may need to readjust it.

Do you have adequate storage for your current lifestyle?

The next thing to think about is whether you have adequate storage for your current lifestyle. You might be keen on minimalism right now, but in the future, that may stop, and you may want to have more possessions. If so, you’ll need to think long-term about if you have enough space and where you can add additional storage to the room.

Remember, overflowing closets and garages that just become storage areas aren’t fun. They reduce the functionality of your home and prevent you from using it for the things that you want to do with it.

Do the core systems work?

Another thing you’ll want to ask yourself is whether your home’s core systems work, like its HVAC, plumbing, electrical, foundation, and roof. Are these operating efficiently?

For example, if you have a problem with your roof, such as missing tiles, you may need to contact roofing contractors. Even small issues can become extremely damaging over time. The same is true for HVAC systems. A single clogged filter can lead to damage to the rest of the system that requires wholesale replacement within a matter of months.

Does it handle your future household plans?

Right now, it might just be you or one other person in your household. But what’s going to happen if you start adding children or extra family members? Is the house still fit for purpose? Often, it’s not. Raising a family in a one-bedroom home is often impossible. It can even be challenging in a two-bedroom apartment. Therefore, you’ll need to think about extra bedrooms that you might need in the future.

How energy efficient is the property?

Lastly, you’ll need to think about sustainability and whether the property is energy efficient. Does it offer things like good insulation and double-glazed windows? If it doesn’t, then you’ll need to look for improvements and upgrades to meet your sustainability goals or climate goals.
