How to Raise a Compassionate Child
Compassion is built in children throughout their lifetimes, which makes for a more responsible and respectful child. They’re also able to learn how to correctly express themselves, identify areas of struggle and how they can look at ways to improve themselves.

In this guide from a private school in London, we look at some ways you help to raise compassion in your child.
Point out bad behaviour
Each child is going to have bouts of bad behaviour, but it doesn’t mean that they’re incapable of change. Each time your child is behaving poorly, use it as an opportunity to direct your child along the right path.
Get them to look at ways that make them understand that what they’re doing is wrong, and how they can change that behaviour to be more resolved members of society. Within that, compassion can be used to help your child know what is right from wrong.
Praise your child
Whether they’ve decided to help someone who has fallen over, allowed their brother or sister to borrow their toys, or they’ve done as well as they can do in a school test – show them how proud you are of their efforts. They’re going to greatly appreciate how much you notice, which in turn will make them feel motivated to continue being kind, express gratitude and learn to be compassionate in front of others.
When out in public, point out examples of compassion
Whenever you’re out and about you’ll find that your child will spot plenty of acts of kindness or good deeds in front of them. Each time they happen, talk to your child about how important they are to building a kind and compassionate person. Also, talk about how they feel when they see that happen and how they can replicate the same gestures in their own lives.
