How to Make Challenging Decisions

15th May 2021

Our brains are brilliant at helping us do millions of things every single day. Most of the decisions we make on a daily basis are subconscious – our brains help us to do the things that we do to survive that we never really have to think too hard about, like blinking and breathing.

But why are some decisions harder to make?

Most people hate having to make difficult decisions. They can range from what to order at a new restaurant or whether to take that job which will mean having to move cities. Making decisions can cause a whole new level of procrastination where fear of making the wrong choice makes the decision seem bigger and bigger.

To stop the fear of making the wrong decision from taking over your life, here are some steps to follow when you have to make challenging decisions.

Be clear on what you want

Having to choose between two options is much harder when neither decision is what you really want to do. When you find yourself stuck between two possibilities, you need to take the time to think about what you really want. A good example is thinking about whether to take the vaccine. It is strongly advised that most people should get it, but some people think that it is too soon in the process to take a vaccine that requires a very specific pharmacy grade refrigerator to keep the doses safe. Do your own research, making sure the information is fact-checked and not the opinion of somebody on social media.

If neither not being vaccinated or not trusting the science at this stage is your choice, the answer doesn’t have to be one or the other – it could simply mean waiting until you have all of the information you need before you make your decision.

Learn that something is better than nothing

If you’re somebody who is often paralysed by your indecision then you’ll know this feeling all too well. It’s the feeling of ‘well, I don’t like any of these options so I’ll choose nothing’ Going back to the restaurant example. You look at the menu and don’t see anything that you’ve tried and liked before so that means having to choose something unfamiliar to you. Do you not eat? If you choose not to eat, then you’ll be hungry later. This is an example of bad decision making. You could opt to be brave and try something new or to ask the server if any substitutions can be made. That way you still get to eat.

It’s the same for bigger choices, too. You can’t decide what you want to do for a career right away- does that mean not working at all and having to borrow money from others so you can pay your bills? No. On the most part, it will mean taking a job you can do that will help to pay the bills, You may even find you like it and want to make that job a permanent fixture in your life.
