Helping Your Child to Become More Independent

13th February 2023

As your child grows older, you will need to let go of their hand so that they’re able to do things for themselves and develop independence. They will need to solve problems that they come across and be self-sufficient. You can start by asking them for help on things, like cooking by getting them to whisk and prepare ingredients. It also evens out the load so that you’re not overloaded and can spend time with them. Below are some more parenting tips that we’ve picked up having worked with a few Surrey private schools.

Set Chores

Chores are a great way to do this. Divide up all the household responsibilities into individual chores and create a rota system. This will help them to learn responsibility.

Be Patient

As parents, we end up doing a lot of things ourselves as we’re often running short on time. While it may take your child a little longer, be patient and you will see them slowly pick them up. It’s vital for their development, so make time and space for them to work on them. Avoid leaving things till the last minute as they will likely feel pressured.

Let Them Make Decisions

When they grow up, they will also need to make their own decisions and the right ones for them. This requires critical thinking and is something that you can help them practise by giving them the freedom to make their own decisions (within reason). That might be choosing a pair of trainers they like or how to spend their pocket money.

Asking For Help

Independence doesn’t mean doing absolutely everything yourself. Sometimes we require help and that’s okay. We all have our own skill sets. There’s no shame in asking for it and is just as important for children to be taught.
