Do you have the time to take care of your pet?

The first question to ask yourself is whether you truly have the time to look after your pet. For instance, if you work out of the home for long hours, your pet could end up getting bored or lonely. This could impact their behaviour and result in issues such as damage to your property or furniture, as well as impact their mental well-being.

For those working at home, getting a pet can be easier as they will be there to spend time with them, and let them out when they need the toilet. Additionally,  if it’s a dog they have, they will be able to walk them several times a day, which is much better for a pet’s physical and mental health.

However, it is worth noting that there are ways around this problem, such as sending your pet to day care, or employing a pet sitter or dog walker. It’s just that these options will increase the costs associated with bringing a pet into your life.

Do you have enough money to cover the cost of having a pet?

The previous topic brings us neatly to the next question of whether you have enough money to care for a pet. Pets can be expensive, as it’s not only the initial costs of setting them up in your home, but also the ongoing costs of food, and veterinary care that you will need to cover.

Before you decide to get a pet, it’s a good idea to make a list of all the costs involved and add up the total to see whether it’s a reasonable choice. If not, then you may wish to consider waiting or choosing a pet that is less expensive to keep.

Also, it’s worth noting that you can save money on pet items by finding a good value store like JSMPet online. Many such stores even offer an additional discount, so you can get the best quality items for your furry friend without breaking the bank.

Do you have room for your pet?

Another consideration when getting a pet is whether you have enough room for them to be happy. For example, getting a large dog if you live in a small studio or one-bedroom apartment with no access to a garden may not be the best choice. Instead, if space is limited and you have no access to a garden, then a smaller animal such as a hamster might be a more sensible option.

Are you (and everyone else in the home) patient enough for a pet?

Last of all, you need to ask yourself whether you and everyone who lives with you are patient enough to have a pet around. For instance, you may have all the patience you need to love and care for a rescue, but if you live with younger children or older people with mobility issues, an animal with additional needs might not be the ideal choice.
