An 8-Year-Old’s Christmas List (Under £30!) + Where to Find the Best Presents They Won’t Already Have

12th October 2020

I don’t know about you but I am thinking about Christmas a lot earlier this year. I am normally the one who rolls my eyes and tells you to wait until at least November to even mention Christmas to me. Put up your Christmas decorations before December and I no longer want to be your friend. But this year a lot of us seem to be embracing it all already and I’ve already bought quite a few Christmas presents! I think it’s because we’ve all had such a tough year that we are clinging to anything that we can celebrate and that brings us joy; so I’m going with it and fully embracing a long Christmas season in 2020! My daughter got into the Christmas spirit in approximately July and has already spent loads of time deciding what she would like for her Christmas presents this year and has come up with a great big list for Santa and her family to choose from.

You may not have heard of Wicked Uncle before, but they have so many brilliant things for kids of all ages, and it’s really easy to search within a particular age group or like at what is popular and find great gifts to choose from. Wicked Uncle can also wrap and send gifts along with a handwritten card straight to the recipient for you which is perfect if you won’t be seeing the children themselves (especially this year!) and is so convenient too.

So here are Ava’s top 5 choices that have made it onto her Christmas list from Wicked Uncle. They have so many brilliant things that are right up her street and to be honest I want a lot of them too! There is so much that I have never seen anywhere else before – and with a lot of young kids in my family and within my friendship group I have spent a lot of time looking for gifts for kids!

An 8-Year-Old’s Christmas List

Bath Bomb Factory – So Bomb DIY £24.95

As soon as I saw this I knew Ava would like it and I wasn’t wrong! Luckily I know her well because I had already got her this for Christmas! Like most kids, she loves bath bombs, and she loves anything creative so this is perfect for her.

With this set, kids can mix and mould their own colourful glittery creations with a surprise figure hidden inside too for a fun bathtime!

Unicorn Cake Baking Kit £15.95

As soon as I saw this multi-layered unicorn cake I knew Ava would choose it! She is obsessed with unicorns and baking and eating cake! I have never made a pretty cake before so this kit would be brilliant for providing everything we need plus the instructions so that we can attempt it!

I think it makes a lovely, slightly different gift for a child and something you can do and enjoy together. The pretty unicorn rainbow cake kit includes the dry ingredients, tins and paper that you need which is brill, and it uses natural colours too.

Felt Puppies – Creative Sewing Kit £11.95

Again, this is perfect for my daughter who definitely didn’t get her craft-loving genes from me. As soon as she spotted this she got excited – it combines two of her favourite things – dogs and sewing.

You get to make a Daschund, Scottie and Terrier and the set also comes with two brooch backs and a keyring so you can make great use of them too. The kit also comes with high quality 100% cotton fabric, beads, and needle and thread and is made in the UK. I’m going to ask Ava’s aunty if she’d like to get her this for Christmas and then they can both have fun making them together!

Tobbie the Interactive Robot £29.95

This is a fun robot that you actually build yourself! The 16cm robot walks on six legs and has two interactive modes once it is built. In ‘Follow Me’ he will trail along after you, and in ‘Explore’ mode, he roams using his intelligent infrared sensors to avoid obstacles and turns aside when coming across anything that blocks his way.

He also has fun sound effects and LED eyes, so kids will love playing with it after they have enjoyed building him themselves!

Hairlights – Temporary Colour Highlights £12.95

Another great gift idea that I hadn’t seen before is these temporary hair colours for kids. Ava is so into anything to do with make-up and hair at this age and at only 8-years-old is very stubborn about what she will wear and won’t wear, and how her hair looks and she spends far too long choosing what headband she will wear that day!

So, of course, she got excited by these hair colours when she spotted them! You get six vibrant colour hair chalks so they can add some colour to their hair and they wash out easily too. It comes with a detailed activity guide so they can learn how to create the latest ombre look or some vibrantly coloured highlights!

Glow Art – Neon Effect Drawing Board £25.95

This looks really cool and I hope Santa brings it for Ava so that I can play with it! The fun light-up board uses dozens of coloured LEDs to create a glowing effect and as the screen is see-through you can trace over pictures that you love, or just write or draw whatever you fancy with the fluorescent marker pens it comes with.

Then you turn the frame on to watch the lights illuminate in 36 different ways and colours, transforming the picture with a bright neon effect glow! Then you can just wipe the screen clean using a dry cloth and start all over again. I think this sounds like so much fun.

And a few of my top choices…

Quizzie Water-Squirting Robot £16.95

This cute robot looks like lots of fun and I might get it for my nephews for Christmas (hopefully their parents won’t kill me!!). With Quizzie you can record up to five questions with yes or no answers and if you get the question wrong then it squirts water at you! I can imagine most young kids would love this as they all love playing pranks, particularly on their parents!

It has light and sound effects, and you can also test yourself by playing Quizzie at two games – the tricky Memory Game and the randomly squirting Lucky Game in which you try to avoid getting wet!

Engenius Contraptions – Perpetual Marble Run £29.95

This is another fun gift idea that you build yourself and then get to have loads of fun with. Engenius Contraptions is a flat-pack marble that is made of plywood and all of the parts come in laser-cut sheets. You just follow the simple set of pictures to push-fit the spiral run and zig-zag together and then add the electric motor! The whole thing takes an hour or two and then you can watch the marbles be raised to the top of the lift, descend down the spiral then down the zig-zag track…then back up to the spiral to start again, in perpetual motion.

This was winner of Gift of the Year 2019, and seems like such a satisfying build and brilliant to watch.

Waterproof Notebook £8.95

I hadn’t seen anything like this before and it looks great. You can write in this waterproof notebook in the rain or the shower or wherever you fancy! The notebook has a brown, leather-look hardback cover with the pages made from tear and water-resistant stone paper and it works with any type of pencil. It would be fun to take camping with us and I know Ava would love it.

Rock Painting – Hide & Seek Fun to Share £12.99

Painting rocks and hiding them and looking for those left by others is such a craze right now and I think it’s so lovely. We’ve painted some before and hidden them for other children to find and we’ve found a couple of lovely ones too. It’s great to encourage children outdoors and to investigate their environment, as well as being creative with the painting.

This Rock Painting set is a lovely one to bring all you need together, with six smooth river stones, six acrylic paints, two fine paintbrushes and a 48-page book filled with tips, tricks and step-by-step craft projects for several quirky rock art creations to inspire kids.

Spy X – Night Mission Goggles £19.95

I want these! These battery-operated night vision goggles have tinted blue lenses to enhance night vision, then you can switch on full mode to get directional beams of the bright blue LED light. The retractable scope flips out and the 2x magnifying lens helps you to spot targets from greater distances!

They have adjustable stretchy elastic straps so should fit heads of all sizes and kids of all ages will have loads of fun with these.

Lights from Anywhere £13.95

I know my daughter would love this fun lights magic trick where you can make a light leap from hand to hand, come out of your ear and then disappear! She loves performing tricks for us or putting on shows, so she loves anything like this. I’m not going to lie – I have no idea how this works, and I don’t even want to!
