5 Screen-Free Activities to Try with Your Child

18th April 2021

In a world where more technology is becoming available, it’s easy for children to get sucked into a tablet, smartphone, or sat watching TV. In the current climate, as well, it can be even more tempting.

But there are ways of handling this problem with activities you can do at home or safely away from the house. Here are the top 5 screen-free activities this Nursery in Hertfordshire recommends.

Reading

Kids love a good book, and sitting with their parents while they share a story is often a fond memory for them. Be it a picture book or a children’s novel that can be read in groups or once a week, it’s an activity that can be enjoyed at any level.

Baking a cake

Not only do kids have the chance to get messy, but they work a lot of parts of the brain. A little bit of maths is involved when measuring out your ingredients, hand coordination when making the cake mix or icing, and their planning skills by following the recipe.

Educational games

There are multiple board games, physical games and sports for children to choose from these days. Dust off the Monopoly set and sit with the family, or ask your child to make some paper boats so that they can let them race each other in a nearby stream!

A photography walk

Get the camera out (a disposable one will do!) and head into the woods, the beach or a local walk you all enjoy. Ask your child to take pictures throughout the walk; when you get back ask them about the pictures they took and see what they found interesting.

Watching a film

So long as all of your mobile devices are away, then a movie can be a great way to spend time with your kids. Ask them to choose the film and you can bring the popcorn!
