The French Alps are the perfect place to holiday if you love the outdoors. Amazing scenery, beautiful trails and fresh Alpine air. You may initially think that the only worthwhile thing to do in the Alps is to Ski, but that is not the case at all. You can have a great budget-friendly holiday exploring the area on foot, although you might need to hire a car to get to some of the different areas.
There are many destinations in the Alps to enjoy walking and hiking but there are some in particular that a lover of the outdoors and walking shouldn’t miss!

Chamonix can be expensive to visit during the ski season however if you love the outdoors and want to holiday on a budget, then a hiking and walking holiday here especially during summer is a good choice.
This beautiful natural park has many well-groomed paths and trails which is great for visitors to explore during both winter and summer. The tourist office will point you in the right direction and recommend a route to suit your abilities and needs. With thousands of routes to choose from, this place is a walker’s paradise. You will notice some unusual scenery in this part of the French Alps too which makes it all the more enjoyable for those who visit.
This spa town destination is famous for its ruined Roman baths, impressive buildings and museums. However, the location is also a haven for those who wish to explore the outdoors on foot. If you want to discover the history of the local area and take in the views, then this is the place for you. For an easy-going walk, stroll along the side of the largest natural lake in France. This walk is great for all ages, young and old.
This skiing haven becomes a great place for hiking and walking in the summer months. There are plenty of well mapped out routes and trails here for all abilities. It is a good place to bring children too as there are gentle routes that are not too strenuous but just as beautiful. Taking the summer ski lifts are a good idea too as you can get to the top of your hike without the strain of the walk, before enjoying the route down again. After your hike why not try the après-ski and the impressive list of restaurants.
The historic Chambery is one of the oldest and most visited alpine resorts in France. The Chateau des Ducs de Savoie is one of the draws for visitors here. This town is another brilliant base for those who wish to enjoy the historic aspects of a French town as well as the amazing hiking and walking opportunities. Hikes in this region can also include wine tours too, an enjoyable activity for the adults!
As you can see, there are some brilliant places in the Alps to enjoy a good hike. But this is just the tip of the iceberg with many more towns and villages to find. There’s so much more to the French Alps than just skiing. Whatever your background and whether you are travelling as a family, a couple or a group of friends you will find the perfect destination in the Alps.
