I have always wanted to learn a new language and in particular, I would absolutely love to be able to speak fluent Spanish. I also think it would be amazing to be able to speak Vietnamese even if it was just the basics, as I loved the country and the people so much and I would love to go back.

As most of us did I studied French and German at school, both to GCSE level and I still know bits and pieces but I don’t think I could even hold a conversation in either of them anymore. I’ve probably picked up more from holidays in Spain over the years but my language skills are still incredibly limited.
With many of us being at home so much more at the moment, it could be the perfect time to improve our skills and do some of those things we’ve always planned on doing but never had the chance to.
Obviously we don’t all have loads of extra time now – I know I am super busy homeschooling my daughter whilst trying to fit in my work around that and keeping the house in some semblance of vague order, but not having the chance to go out means that I do have a bit more available time right now.
So I’ve been spending a bit of time here and there to learn a new language using the courses from Learn Languages 24 who gifted me some courses for this review.
I have chosen to start with Spanish as I love the language and Spain is somewhere I love and probably go there more than anywhere else abroad (despite it being 5 years since we last went!). For more widely-spoken languages there are five courses available (beginner to expert and business), with less common languages having one course available.

Learning a new language can be so rewarding as well as fun and hopefully, I’ll come out of lockdown having learnt a new skill and be ready for my much longed for next trip to Spain!

I didn’t think I would, but I find it really fun to use; it changes up how you learn and I really like learning new Spanish words and matching up the Spanish words or phrases to the English ones. It was hard to make myself get started, to be honest, as even though I really do want to learn, I have so much other stuff to do right now, so I did put it off at first. But it’s really important that we make the time for ourselves, especially right now, and I’ve been enjoying learning Spanish a lot and taking the time for myself.
I find myself thinking I’ll just spend five or ten minutes on it and then ending up carrying on and on because I’m enjoying it so much.
As you first start the course you can take a two-minute test to see whereabouts you are and where they should start you, and then you can crack on and choose how many minutes you want to spend learning today.
There’s lots of text to read if you want to, and you can choose from different options, but you can also just click on ‘Start daily tasks’ to begin, which is what I do.
The Learn Languages 24 courses use the Long-Term Memory Learning Method, plus other exclusive learning methods so that you thoroughly absorb your new language. The Long-Term Memory Learning Method is derived from the most important developments in learning theory and language science.
So, you learn a new word and then have to give their meaning at specific intervals:
If you consistently get the word correct at these specific intervals, you should then know the word forever as it will have been committed to your long-term memory. If at any stage you get a word wrong (which of course you will do before you’ve learnt them), then that word will automatically be placed back into the cycle for you to learn again.
All of the words and phrases are given to you in a specific order, so the learning process is completely optimized and the daily exercises offer you a structured way forward. You can choose how many minutes you want to learn that day and you can extend it if you want to keep going. I was pleased to notice that the timer does pause if you need to go onto something else for a minute, so you can carry on where you left off.
At some points, you start to hear Superlearning music in the background, which is said to help you concentrate better and learn quicker. I have been enjoying this so far but you can turn it off easily if you’d rather not have it on.
I’m really enjoying learning in this way and I already feel like I know so many more Spanish words, and I’ve only been doing a bit each day for a few weeks. Ava has also seen me doing the course and she keeps wanting to join in too, and it’s simple enough for her to also use, which is a bonus. She knows a few Spanish words and loves speaking the language so I would love her to pick some more up and be able to use them correctly.
The way you are learning the words changes frequently so you don’t get bored at all and I am finding it a lot of fun and I want to keep practising and learning more. It’s straightforward to get started as well as to continue to use, and hopefully, I will be able to say a lot more next time I get to visit Spain!
